Designed to provide the complete foundation an isopod colony needs to live, burrow, feed, molt, and reproduce.
Plain coco fiber and basic potting soil may hold moisture, but they do not provide much usable nutrition. This small-batch blend combines topsoil and peat moss with rotted hardwood, leaf litter, and flake oyster shell to create a substrate that works more like the forest floor isopods naturally live in.
The topsoil and peat moss provide structure and dependable moisture retention. Rotted hardwood and leaf litter give the colony natural materials to graze on as they slowly break down. Flake oyster shell stays available throughout the substrate as a long-lasting calcium source to support healthy molts and growth.
Why the substrate matters
Isopods spend most of their lives in and directly against the substrate. It is more than something that fills the bottom of the enclosure. It helps regulate moisture, provides a safe place to burrow and molt, and acts as an ongoing food source.
Starting with a complete substrate gives your colony a better foundation from day one and reduces the need to constantly add missing ingredients later.
Want the whole setup instead of just the substrate? This same blend is part of our Isopod Starter Kit, which also includes a bark hide, leaf litter mix, and natural moss.
